50 years ago, when Allen Grievson first opened the doors to Mitchells Grievson in Bishop Auckland, the UK economy faced strikes, high inflation, plus an oil and energy crisis. Anyone would be forgiven for feeling the sense of déjà vu. 1973 was also the year the government introduced Value Added Tax (VAT) at a single rate of 10% on most goods and services, replacing Purchase Tax.
